WAI - the Women’s Art Initiative Collective from Manawatū have over 9 years of art making in response to their personal experiences of violence.
As artists, activists, and advocates for social change their work challenges the many negative stereotypes and myths around who they are because of what they have experienced.
Over 70 women, aged between 20 to 67, have been involved with WAI over this time, both in the Manawatū and Marlborough regions.
WAI offers a voice and an opportunity to positively assert identities and responses to violence within a safe, insider community.
They meet weekly in a designated studio space, provide free art making materials and facilitation, and a community to make work alongside.
They exhibit yearly, offering authentic narratives, and an opportunity for public engagement with their kaupapa.
