The concept of salon PL ties in and plays with the 18th century’s tradition of literary or philosophical salons: gatherings of people held by an inspiring host and following Horace’s definition of poetry “either to please or to educate”.
Salon PL is a mixed performance of sound and sight. Readings of Polish prose and poetry will be complemented by live piano music. You will also listen to immigrant stories told in English by people whose heritage is Polish, but whose journey to Tauranga may have taken a few detours first. A ceramic art installation and other exhibits by Polish born Anya Fischer will also be shown.
The event is emceed in English, with some of the poems read in Polish with English translations, or with translation hand-outs provided.
Selected Polish prose and poetry will be read by local Poles who have plucked up the courage to read on stage or share their stories. Playing the baby grand piano will be retired concert pianist Lee Cameron. Given the perfect salon-style ambience of the Jam Factory, it makes for a quirky combination of culture and community based creativity.
The event is a brainchild of a few local Polish women with a love of language and music who are associated with the Polish Community Trust, Bay of Plenty. Their aim is to surprise, inspire and entertain – because poetry is anything but difficult and exclusive. It can be utterly fun, pushing boundaries, shifting paradigms and packaging pinpricks and provocations in cleverly crafted verses. And music needs no words to delight.
