This exhibition in the People's Gallery will feature a snapshot of Aotearoa New Zealand, featuring:

Flax - handmade woven harakeke items such as ketes, backpacks and wall hangings.

Tracks - original acrylic paintings showcasing a selection of walking and cycling tracks around New Zealand.

Michele Burns and her sister-in law Vicki Burns created the concept of The Flax and Tracks exhibition with the hope of showcasing aspects of life fundamental to living in New Zealand, combining the awe inspiring scenery of this beautiful country along with a taste of our heritage.

Michele lives at Mount Maunganui where she paints and spends time enjoying the outdoors.

'Tracks' is a culmination of paintings reflecting her experiences completing some of New Zealand's stunning walking and biking tracks.

This collection includes the spectacular Alps to Ocean South Island bike ride, the Queen Charlotte track through the Marlborough Sounds, the Otago Rail Trail as seen through the eyes of Grahame Sydney, and the northern Twin Coast cycle trail between Hokianga Harbour and Opua.

Vicki Burns contribution to this exhibition "Flax; showcases the weaving skills she learned in 2019 while completing the Kāwai Raupapa: Certificate in Māori and Indigenous Art (Level 4) course at the Te Wānanga o Aotearoa.

She recognises the influence and talents of three beautiful souls, her kaiako: Sarah Tangitu, Rawinia Gray and Rangi Ranui. They guided and inspired her on a journey in the practice and tikanga of raranga (weaving) of harakeke.

The harakeke is all sourced from her garden in the beautiful Minden in Te Puna.
